200 CMM Scholars Named Print E-mail
    Finally, here’s the Good News!

After two months of thorough screening, the Center for Moderate Muslims (CMM) announces the final list of scholars accepted to the CMM Second Semester 2008-2009 Scholarship Program. This scholarship is available to poor but qualified Muslim students nationwide. Furthermore, because of internal displacements brought about by the conflict in Mindanao, deserving orphans were also given preference. Many of them are now staying in Lanao del Sur as refugees.

Thousands of application forms were received by the CMM’s regional offices in Taguig, Marawi, Davao, Cotabato, Zamboanga, Tawi-tawi, Basilan and Sulu as early as October 2008. Unlike in the past when acceptance of scholars was based on a competitive examination, this time, a Scholarship Committee composed of academicians, ulama and professionals, was created to oversee the objective selection of scholars.

A total of two hundred (200) students were selected to become recipients of the CMM Scholarship Grant. A new feature of this Grant is the inclusion of the Madrasah students (morit), which is a first occurrence in the history of the local Madrasah Educational System in the Philippines. Many ulama (religious leaders) and asatidh (teachers) happily view this CMM scholarship innovation as the start of the recognition of the positive role that the Madrasah graduates play in nation-building.

The scholars are required to maintain a grade of 2.5 (college level) and 85% for the other levels. They will receive monthly stipends P1,000 (College level), P700 (High School level), and P500 (Elementary level). The Madrasah students have their corresponding levels also. For the Full Scholars (FS), their actual Tuition Fees will be paid by CMM, with a maximum of P15,000 tuition fee assistance for those enrolled in private schools. Proof of payment is required for the reimbursement.

All scholars are required to attend the weekly Islamic lectures/seminars to be handled by the CMM ulama. They are also enjoined to contact the CMM office near their present place of residence for administrative matters.

Food for Thought

“…..The gap set up between the Muslims (Islam) and the rest of the world can be removed only by an open-minded approach to the Qur’an, Islam, and the Muslim situation. For a number of historical reasons, contact between the West and the Islamic World is increasing. The relationship must grow on a foundation of knowledge and objective understanding. In this period, bias and ignorance deserve to be seen more as a challenge to be overcome than obstacles to be helplessly lamented!...”
