The basketball team, Abdul halim, bagged the P30,000 cash prize and a huge trophy, as champions in the recently concluded First Metro Manila Muslim Sports Festival which saw action at the Horseshoe Plaze in Maharlika Village, Taguig last February 28, 2004.
Garnering the P20,000 Ist Runner-up Prize were the Hasmin Team. Nabielcom Team, being the 2nd Runner-Up placer got P10,000 ND trophy, while Bandar Team got a consolation prize. Alfie Dais, Abdul Halim forward, got the much-coveted Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award with his winning fastbreaks and long shots. Donning complete uniforms since day one up to the championship round, Team Abdul Halim easily ran away with the Best in Uniform Award. The Mythical Five chosen were Dais from Abdul Halim Team; Acraman from Quiapo Team; Longno from Nabielcom Team; Aguam from Bandar Team; and Gabiel from Hasmin Team. Alex Tampi, from Nabielcom Team, got the Best in Sportsmanship Award. The sportsfest, which kicked-off last January 17, provided for free refreshments to both players and spectators. Sponsors were Philippine Islamic Council (PIC) and the National Ulama Council. Aside from the benefits of harboring camaraderie and sportsmanship among the athletes, the aim of the Sportsfest is to veer away the minds of the young from drug addiction and terrorism. Lectures on moderate Islam were undertaken before the start of every event. |
