Teams doing their artwork
As its initial salvo in the service of the Muslim community, Taha M. Basman Foundation (TMBMIF) together with the Center for Moderate Muslims (CMM) celebrated Eid’ul Adha through the sponsorship of an “On-the-Spot Art Contest” for the students of TMB-Hamdani Day Care Center (THDCC) and the Madrasah-Montessori Learning Center (MMLC). The contest was held at the CMM Headquarters in Taguig last November 26, 2009.

Nine teams vied in the art competition which primarily aims to encourage Muslim children to express their creativity through art. The activity is also an expression of how the Muslim children see the world around them. The nine teams were represented by the eight class sections of the THDCC and one class section of the MMLC. This activity is on its pilot stage and is envisioned to be replicated in other Muslim communities in the country.

Each team is composed of three pre-selected participants from each class section. All teams were given identical art materials and worked on a common theme drawn at the start of the contest proper.

Each team worked on their art project simultaneously for one and a half hours. After which, each of the four members of the board of judges scored each artwork. Criteria for judging include: relevance to the topic (30%), neatness (15%), teamwork (15%), and creativity (40%). Tallying was done immediately while the announcement of the winners and awarding of prizes followed. Trophies and cash prizes await the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winners. Judges included: Ms. Cecille Azurin (OB Montessori Foundation), Ms. Ratil Dianalan (Hamdani Foundation), Mr. Mark Sison (Division of Taguig Pateros, Arts Coordinator), and Ms. Myra Pinga (Silangan Elementary School.

Games and Gift-giving

While pilgrims in Makkah and Arafat celebrate the end of Hajj, kids of THDCC and MMLC in Taguig also took part in outdoor games with prizes awaiting them. After which they proceed to the CMM Headquarters where they received their gifts sponsored by the Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam, a non-governmental organization based in Malacca, Malaysia headed by its Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Bin Mohd Rustam.

Food for Thought

“…..The gap set up between the Muslims (Islam) and the rest of the world can be removed only by an open-minded approach to the Qur’an, Islam, and the Muslim situation. For a number of historical reasons, contact between the West and the Islamic World is increasing. The relationship must grow on a foundation of knowledge and objective understanding. In this period, bias and ignorance deserve to be seen more as a challenge to be overcome than obstacles to be helplessly lamented!...”
