The Chief Minister of Malacca (Malaysia), Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Bin Mohd Rustam (also the President of Malay and Islamic World Dunia Melayub Dunia Islam, DMDI) and his delegation came to Manila last October 26, 2009 for a Humanitarian Mission for Muslim Victims of Typoon Ondoy.
Datuk Seri Rustam hands-over the donation to CMM/MRI Exec. Dir. Ann Basman. Looking on are Exec. Director Ali Sangki (Office on Muslim Affairs), and Congressman Pax Mangudadatu (Sultan Kudarat). Similar donations were also given to the Mosques in Tumana, Marikina and Pinagbuhatan, Pasig.
In his brief one-day visit, he hosted a breakfast meeting with, among others, officers of the Malaysian Embassy in Manila, Undersecretary Ali Sangki of the Office of Muslims Affairs, Congressman Pax Mangudadatu of Sultan Kudarat, Hadja Tahara Ann Basman of Mindanao Research Institute (MRI) and the Imam of Tumana Mosque in Marikina. He personally handed the ceremonial donation of RM10,000 (Php136,000) each to MRI and the Tumana, Marikina Mosque.
For MRI, the amount will be used for its Day Care Program and Da’wah activities in Metro Manila, while for Marikina, the rehabilitation of its devastated Mosque will be given priority.
He then proceeded to Pinagbuhatan, Pasig to visit the Muslim flood victims there and give relief goods to 300 families from its Jama’a (congregation). In a dialogue with the residents, he promised to return to the community to bestow more help in the rehabilitation of their mosque.
Together with his delegation and guests, he then proceeded to the MRI/CMM offices in Taguig City to visit the TMB-Hamdani Day Care Center where they were warmly welcomed by its students. At the nearby CMM headquarters, he was also greeted by the Madrasah-Montessori students before he proceeded to distribute relief items to another 300 families of flood victims in Maharlika Village in Taguig City.

Last November 18, the Chief Minister indeed returned after a visit in Sultan Kudarat hosted by Congressman Pax Mangodadato, DMDI’s Philippine Representative. True to his promise, he again handed a donation of RM10,000 (Php136,000) for the rehabilitation of the Firdaus Mosque in Pasig. Representatives of MRI received the ceremonial donation in their behalf.
Other humanitarian missions
Prior to the Chief Minister’s visits, DMDI officers, headed by Datuk Dr. Hj.Jamil Bin Mukmin (Vice President) and Amir Murtadha Bin Zaini (Asst Project Manager), coordinated with MRI, with the endorsement of the Malaysian Embassy in Manila, to undertake more humanitarian missions in the Muslim communities of Taguig, Marikina, and Pasig last October 14 and 15, 2009. They again gave relief packages to Typhoon Ondoy victims from Maharlika Village, Taguig (300 families), Tumana Marikina (400 families), and Pinagbuhatan, Pasig (500 families). The Center for Moderate Muslims (CMM) and Mindanao Research Institute (MRI), in cooperation with the Taha M. Basman Memorial Islamic Foundation (TMBMIF) coordinated these relief operations.

Food for Thought
“…..The gap set up between the Muslims (Islam) and the rest of the world can be removed only by an open-minded approach to the Qur’an, Islam, and the Muslim situation. For a number of historical reasons, contact between the West and the Islamic World is increasing. The relationship must grow on a foundation of knowledge and objective understanding. In this period, bias and ignorance deserve to be seen more as a challenge to be overcome than obstacles to be helplessly lamented!...”
