Comm. Basman Receives Posthumous Award Print E-mail
The University of the Philippines Institute of Islamic Studies (UP-IIS) conferred a posthumous award to the late UNESCO Commissioner Taha M. Basman last April 24, 2009 at the Bulwagang Sala’am, Romulo Hall in UP Diliman, Quezon City. This was in recognition of his active role in helping the Muslim community (Ummah) in terms of da’wah, education and livelihood. The award was received by his widow and their children during the Recognition Ceremonies of the said Institute.

Commissioner Basman, who was also the President of the Center for Moderate Muslims- Philippines (CMM-Phils.), had consistently supported the activities organized by the Islamic Institute. He also co-sponsored some of their seminar workshops and conferences through the CMM. His in-depth participation in helping the Ummah can be reflected through the regular activities he organized in Muslim communities not only in Maharlika Village (Taguig), Culiat (Quezon City) and Quiapo (Manila), but also in Zamboanga City, Marawi City, Davao City, Sulu, Basilan, Tawi-tawi and Cebu. A few of these projects include Imam Training Program (ITP), Academic and Madrasah Scholarships, Computer Literacy Program (CLP), Daycare Center, Sunday Women Group (Islamic seminars for women every Sunday), Radio Programs, Cable TV Shows and other da’wah-related activities. Despite his demise, CMM vowed to preserve Comm. Basman’s legacy of serving the Muslim brothers and sisters by continuing the abovementioned activities that he started.

Food for Thought

“…..The gap set up between the Muslims (Islam) and the rest of the world can be removed only by an open-minded approach to the Qur’an, Islam, and the Muslim situation. For a number of historical reasons, contact between the West and the Islamic World is increasing. The relationship must grow on a foundation of knowledge and objective understanding. In this period, bias and ignorance deserve to be seen more as a challenge to be overcome than obstacles to be helplessly lamented!...”
